At Studio Lacquer Decor we offer the possibility for devising unique pieces together with you, from design, manufacturing and the finishing. If desired we can finish your designs, existing furniture and other objects with this high-quality exceptional Japanese lacquer Urushi upon request.
On the following pages you will find a number of objects manufactured by us allowing you a glimpse of our modern implementation of more than nine thousand year old Japanese beauty.
The techniques which we use have been based on the traditional Japanese lacquer techniques with the use of Urushi lacquer. We were privileged to have learned these basic techniques from a Japanese lacquer artist.
With a lot of passion for material and by many years expirementing with these traditional techniques we found our own way and managed to create our entirely own style. Unique, contemporary and with respect for traditional crafts.
The process is long and labour intensive, independent of the size of the surface it costs on average 2-6 months to carry out the finishing. In some cases 60 layers are applied and polished by hand. Depending on the kind of Urushi the time it takes a single layer to dry can take from 2 hours up to 3 months.
Beside the Urushi itself we use several materials such as gold, silver and palladium leafs, metal powders, different pigments, mother-of –pearl, eggshell and so much more to reach an extremely unique result each time. Most of the materials added in the process we import from Japan.
In association with furniture manufacturer Intarsio different objects such as furniture, wall decorations, jewellery boxes can be designed and manufactured. We work in assignment for companies such as furniture makers, architects and artists, but also for individuals. Japanese lacquer techniques can be applied on table tops, panels and several other pieces of furniture components and different surfaces such as wood, metal, glass, plastic and much more.
Examples can be found here, feel free to contact us for the possibilities.
